Hampton got its first win of the season by beating Savannah State 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 25-15) Tuesday night in a packed Holland Hall.
Aaryn Harrison led the offense with 18 kills and 34 total attacks, resulting in 21.5 points in the winning effort. Lihi Elkayam had 45 of the Lady Pirates’ 46 assists. Mianna Armstrong was also dominating on the attack for Hampton and was second on the team with 13 kills and 31 total attacks.
The Lady Pirates (1-16) stormed out of the gates by winning their first set 25-19. Despite losing the second set 19-25, they would keep up the momentum by winning sets three and four for a 3-1 win. The third set of the match was the most competitive, as both Hampton and Savannah State tied the game four times and swapped the lead three times.
Alyssa Jackson had a team-high 14 digs in the win. April Hayes led Savannah State with 16 kills in the loss.
Hampton goes back on the road on Friday for the North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament. Over two days, the Lady Pirates will face Alabama State, Houston Baptist, South Carolina State and North Carolina Central.
Hampton will return to Holland Hall Oct. 3 for a MEAC match against Delaware State at 6 p.m.
