Eagles Drop Opener of Friar Classic to UTEP

Aidan Mooney had 11 kills, and Coppin State could not overcome a slow start, as Texas-El Paso defeated the Eagles 25-5, 25-17, 25-22 in the first match of the Friar Classic on Friday at Providence College.

After allowing the Miners (3-8) a .647 hitting percentage in the first set, Coppin State held UTEP to a .138 hitting percentage in the second set and .053 in the third set but it was not enough to overcome its own offensive struggles. UTEP also added 19 service aces for the match.

The Eagles (0-6) hit -.062 in the first set and .000 in both the second and third sets.

Senior Brittany Arvin paced the Eagles with five kills, while Kanishia Sheppard and Lauren Lacey added two kills each.

Tyler Phillips had eight digs to lead Coppin State and Lacey added seven blocks and eight assists.

Patty Jarmoc had seven service aces and Jennifer Nolasco added six for UTEP.

Three service aces and a pair of kills by Daidre Mendenhall helped UTEP race out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and the Miners cruised to a 25-5 win.

After spotting the Miners an early 8-3 lead in the second set the Eagles would rally.

CSU went on a 10-5 run to tie the score at 13-13 aided by a kill from Arvin and blocks from Salena Weekly and Lacey and Sheppard and Lacey.

A kill by Casey McCanelly ignited a 4-0 Miner run, but the Eagles rallied to trim the deficit to 18-17 with the last point coming on an ace from Sheppard.

The Miners used a pair of service aces from Jarmoc and kills by Irma Blanco and McCanelly to close out the set.

Coppin State fell behind 18-12 in the third set before staging another comeback.

A pair of kills from Sheppard and Lacey and the serving of Samantha Barnes led the Eagles to a 6-0 run that tied the score at 18-18.

The teams traded points until the Miners went on a 3-0 run to take a 23-20 lead.

A kill by Arvin brought the Eagles to within 24-22, but Jarmoc ended the match with a kill giving the Miners the set, and the match.
