UMES Shuts Down NSU, 3-0

Christine Edwards hit .300 with eight kills and five digs and Whitney Johnson hit .308 with six kills as the Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team defeated Norfolk State 3-0 on Tuesday night at Echols Hall. The Lady Hawks took the match 25-9, 25-10, 25-12.

 

UMES (5-5) got out to quick starts in the first two sets and dominated the entire way. In the third set, NSU (2-10) kept it close early, but could not hang in with the tough Lady Hawk offense. The Spartans had some momentum at the beginning of set 3 and took a 3-1 lead on a kill by Angie Clewis. Four straight Spartan errors gave the Lady Hawks a 5-3 lead.

 

 UMES would not relinquish the lead and held NSU to just nine more points for the rest of the set.

 

 As a team, the Lady Hawks hit .355 with 33 kills and just six errors compared to the Spartans' 29 errors. UMES also won on the defensive front, tallying 41 digs to NSU's 29.

 

 For UMES, Christina Estebane' had a double-double of 18 assists and 13 digs.

 

Clewis had a match-high nine kills for NSU. Breanna Allums had five kills and three digs.

 

The Spartans head south to Cullowhee, N.C. this weekend to play in the Western Carolina Tournament. They play host Western Carolina (2:30 p.m.) and Presbyterian (5 p.m.) on Friday and take on Arkansas State at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
