Spartans Rally to Beat Hampton 3-2

The Norfolk State volleyball team earned its second win of the season with a 3-2 non-conference defeat of Hampton on Tuesday night at Holland Hall.

 

After dropping the opening set 25-23, the Spartans (2-6) won the next two sets 25-22, 25-23, but lost the fourth set 25-21. In the deciding set, NSU sealed the win with a 15-13 victory.

 

With the loss, Hampton fell to 0-9 on the season.

 

All five sets were close, with both teams taking and relinquishing leads in each.

 

Breanna Allums and Yolanda Roberts both led the Spartans with double-doubles in kills and digs. Allums recorded her first career double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs, both career highs. Roberts had 15 kills, 11 digs and a team-high three service aces.

 

Nicole Kessner had 43 assists and 11 digs, while Jourdan Ellison had a career-high 24 digs.

 

For Hampton, Aaryn Harrison tallied a match-high 19 kills and had nine kills and two block assists. Alyssa Jackson had 19 digs, while Mianna Armstrong and Adriana Vazquez had 16 apiece.

 

NSU heads to Raleigh, N.C. this weekend to play in the Hilton/RTP N.C. State Volleyball Classic. The Spartans play N.C. State (Noon) and UNC Asheville (5 p.m.) on Friday and take on William & Mary at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
