UMES' Worsley Named MEAC Woman of the Year

University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Jessica Worsley was named the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Woman of the Year during an awards luncheon held at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. WTKR NewsChannel 3’s Weekend Anchor Domonique Benn served as the Mistress of Ceremonies.

The award, selected annually by the MEAC Senior Woman Administrators, celebrates the achievements of senior student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership.

Worsley led her team to a 4-2 victory over Arkansas State to win the 2008 NCAA Women’s Bowling National Championship. It was the first Division I national championship in both conference and school history. She earned All-Tournament honors and was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship.

During her senior season, Worsley, played in 78 games for the Lady Hawks last season and averaged a 181.23 pinfall including a game-high 257.

The two-time University of Maryland Eastern Shore Female Athlete of the Year (2007 and 2008) spent time off the lanes volunteering at the NASCAR Volunteer Food Services, tutoring at the Salvation Army as well as serving as a volunteer coach at a bowling center.

Worsley, a MEAC and United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Academic All-American, compiled a 3.0 GPA and graduated in May with a degree in Chemistry. She will represent the MEAC at the NCAA Woman of the Year luncheon in the fall.

Morgan Maxwell of Howard University was named the runner-up to the award. North Carolina A&T’s Renecia Lovelace was the MEAC’s inaugural recipient in 2006, while Howard’s Courtney Smiley was awarded the honor last year.
