Lady Bulldogs Fall to UNC-Chapel Hill in NCAA First Round

 The SC State women’s tennis team fell to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, 4-0, in the First Round of the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The day began with the Lady Bulldogs (13-4) losing the doubles point to the Tar Heels (18-8), 3-0. Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand defeated Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodezno, 8-2 in the number one position. Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang defeated Andrea Davidova and Daria Sekerina, 8-1 in the number two position; and Alexandra Jurewitz and Laura Reichert defeated Sarai Torres and Amy Chen, 8-2, in the number three position to pick up the doubles point.

On the singles side only the number three, number four and number six position teams completed their matches as the Tar Heels captured the victory. In the number three position, Austin Smith defeated Andrea Davidova, 6-3, 6-0, in the number four position Laura Reichert defeated Sarai Torres, 6-1, 6-1 and in the number six position Meg Fanjoy defeated Iveta Blodniece, 6-1, 6-1.

The loss to UNC-Chapel Hill marks the second time in three years that SC State has fallen to the Tar Heels in NCAA Play.

Game Notes: The Lady Bulldogs number one and number two players, Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodezno competed in their final collegiate game today. Cruz and Rodezno will receive their degrees at tonight's Commencement.
