Wildcats Sweep Bulldogs

Bethune-Cookman softball continued their winning ways this weekend as they wrapped up a series sweep of South Carolina State University, 9-1 on Sunday afternoon at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.

B-CU (12-28, 6-0 MEAC) was just unwilling to allow their perfect streak in MEAC play die this weekend. After a thrilling come-from-behind, eighth inning victory yesterday, the Wildcats simply took out the wood?figuratively speaking, for today’s series finale against the visiting Bulldogs of SCSU (4-20, 0-6 MEAC).

Already leading 1-0 after the second inning, thanks largely to a solo homerun by freshman Anush Mooradian, B-CU would tag on another three runs in the third inning to blow the game out of reach. It didn’t help that SCSU’s head coach was ejected in the home-half of the third for arguing a call.

B-CU’s Ashton Hinds and Brandi Holley walked, while Holly Bussey collected a RBI ground-out to short that crossed Hinds. MEAC Pitcher of the Week Allison Garcia helped out her own cause with a two-run homer to left field that allowed the Maroon and Gold to go up, 4-0.

In the fifth frame, B-CU added three more runs with help from senior Christina Trimble’s two-run scoring double to bring in Bussey and Garcia on the play. Freshman Brittanu Austin later scored teammate Trimble with a RBI double to right, but was later called out at third trying to stretch it into a triple.

It didn’t matter, however, as the Wildcats led 7-0 after five inning of play.

SCSU got on the board in the top-half of the sixth with a long homerun from third baseman Yeshira Butler who posted her first of the year in that category.

But the Wildcats had an answer for their visitors from Orangeburg, S.C. with two more runs in the bottom of the frame that closed it out with a run-rule contest. That was thanks mainly in part to the play of Garcia who doubled to centerfield scoring Holley for the final of 9-1 in the contest.

The win went to Garcia who upped her record on the year to 11-15, as well as staying perfect in MEAC play at 6-0. She went six full innings on the mound giving up just one earned run and scattering nine hits and striking out four batters.

The loss went to TaTreka Polite who earned all the decisions this weekend for the Bulldogs to drop to 2-15 on the year.

SCSU was led by Denitia Carter with two hits, as well as the solo homer from Butler. B-CU was led by Garcia with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, as well as collecting three RBI and scoring twice. Six other Wildcats had one hit apiece.
