MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY SOFTBALL HONORS

 Hampton shortstop Evelyn Garcia earned the MEAC Softball Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday. Emily Johnson of Howard earned Rookie of the Week accolades while Sasha Philpot of North Carolina A&T State earned Pitcher of the Week honors.


Garcia (SS, 5-7, Jr., Poquoson, Va.) had a great week at the plate as she batted .500 in five games with two home runs, one double and nine RBI. In the final game of a three-game home stand against Delaware State, Garcia hit two grand slams and recorded eight RBI in just four appearances at the plate. She also tallied four stolen bases, 15 putouts and 14 assists for the week.

Johnson (P/IF, 5-7, Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) batted .750 (6-for-9) for the week with one triple, one double and three RBI. Johnson recorded two perfect performances at the plate (5-for-5) in a doubleheader against Morgan State. She also added two walks in addition to two putouts and two assists.

Philpot (P, 5-6, So., Stone Mountain, Ga.) pitched two shutouts (0.00 ERA) as she recorded back-to-back wins against Appalachian State and Norfolk State. For the week, Philpot gave up only nine hits, two walks and struck out three batters in 11 innings.


Other Top Performers

Sylvia Felder (NCAT) hit her first career grand slam against Norfolk State and collected 10 RBI in 10 games to help the Lady Aggies to a 5-0 mark last week.

Brianne Gutierrez (HOW) hit .694 and picked up eight RBI and seven hits last week for the Lady Bison.

Bonnie Heineken (UMES) recorded a grand slam with five RBI in an 18-3 win over Coppin State.

Ryanne Hill (NCAT) batted .429 with one home run, one double and six RBI in five games (14 appearances) last week.

Aisha Holloman (DSU) finished with a .667 batting average with one double and one RBI to post a win over Hampton.

Jessica Hurston (HOW) earned the win against Morgan State with a 1.28 ERA in seven innings.

Mishayla Truttman (UMES) hit .308 with six RBI and five runs along with 15 putouts for the Lady Hawks last week.
