The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced the 2008 Men’s and Women’s All-MEAC tennis teams during its banquet Thursday night in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Crabtree Valley Hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Hampton sophomore Na-Hyun Baek and Norfolk State junior Miroslav Vlcek were named the 2008 MEAC Men and Women’s Tennis Players of the Year, as voted by the leagues’ head tennis coaches and sports information directors.
Baek tallied a 13-3 overall mark including an 11-1 record at the number one singles position. She finished the regular season on an eight match win streak including an undefeated 5-0 mark in northern divisional play.
Vlcek posted a 3-0 mark in the southern division and an 8-2 overall record at the number one single’s position. He was third in the league with an 8-2 record in doubles play.
South Carolina State head coach Hardeep Judge earned Women’s Coach of the Year accolades. The honor is the third on the women’s side for Judge, who also earned Men’s Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 and 2007. This season under Judge’s guidance, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 4-0 record in the southern division and a 10-3 record overall. The Lady Bulldogs have gone undefeated in conference play four consecutive years.
Hampton’s Dr. Robert Screen garnered Men’s Coach of the Year honors. Screen’s team recorded a perfect 5-0 mark in northern divisional play and concluded the regular season with an 8-7 overall record. In 35 years at the helm, Screen has recorded 1,025 wins and is the all-time winningest coach among NCAA Division I coaches for both men’s and women’s tennis.
Alexis McCoy of Morgan State was named Rookie of the Year for the women, while Gabriel Meana of South Carolina State earned the honor for the men. McCoy posted a 2-0 mark in the northern divisional and was 8-2 overall. Meana tallied a 13-2 record at the number four singles position and a 14-3 record overall, including a 3-0 southern divisional mark
Joining Baek and McCoy on the 2008 Women’s All-MEAC Tennis First-Team are Morgan State teammates Walaa Elsir and Viktoriya Lukynenko, Bethune-Cookman’s Monika Musilova and South Carolina State’s Marcela Rodeno completed the first-team.

Along with Vlcek and Meana, Florida A&M’s Clifford Malivert earned 2008 Men’s All-MEAC Tennis first-team honors. South Carolina State teammates Tomas Dobrtka, Ivan Milivojevic and Radek Pivonka also selected to the first-team.
The 2008 MEAC Tennis Championship tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19 at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Top seeded Hampton Lady Pirates will open up play against Bethune-Cookman on Friday. The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers will also compete at 8:30 a.m. against the Howard Lady Bison.
On the men’s side, the Hampton Pirates will face fourth seeded Norfolk State beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Bethune-Cookman matches up against Morgan State in the other early morning men’s match.
Action continues on Saturday, April 19 with semifinal play beginning at 8:30 a.m. The 2008 MEAC Tennis Championship will conclude on Sunday, April 20 with the women’s match beginning at 9 a.m. followed by the men finale at 11:30 a.m.
