MEAC Announces Tennis Championship Seedings

 The Hampton Lady Pirates and South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs earned the top seeds in the women’s northern and southern division, while the Hampton Pirates and Florida A&M Rattlers clinched the top seeds in the men’s northern and southern division of the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship. The championship begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18 at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Lady Pirates clinched the number one seed in the north with a 5-0 mark in conference play. They concluded the regular season with three straight wins and finished with a 7-9 overall record. The reigning MEAC champion, Lady Bulldogs, claimed their third consecutive top seed and also posted an unblemished mark in conference play at 4-0 in the southern division.

Howard (3-2) won the tiebreaker over Delaware State and Morgan State in the northern division to earn the number two seed. The Lady Hornets of Delaware State obtained the number three seed followed by the Lady Bears who earned the fourth spot in the north.

The Spartans of Norfolk State (3-1) clinched the number two seed in the south. The Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M followed in third with a 2-2 mark in conference play. Bethune-Cookman, runners-up in last year’s championship earned the fourth and final seed in the southern division.

One the men’s side, the defending MEAC champion, Hampton Pirates swept their MEAC opponents with a 5-0 conference record to clinch the top seed in the north. The Florida A&M Rattlers (3-0), who lost to Hampton 4-1 in last year’s final, clinched the top seed in the southern division.

Morgan State (4-1) earned the second seed in the north. Delaware State (3-2) and Howard (2-3) followed with third and fourth seeds to round out the northern division.

The South Carolina State Bullodgs (2-1) secured the second seed in the southern division. Bethune-Cookman (1-2) claimed the third seed in the south, while Norfolk State (0-3) completed the championship field with the fourth seed.

Only the top four teams in each division are eligible to compete for the conference title. Seedings are determined by conference divisional records. Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore men’s and women’s teams along with North Carolina A&T’s women’s team have been eliminated from tournament play based on their conference finish.

The MEAC Tennis Championship begins on Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20 at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
