South Carolina State announced Doug Robertson, Jr. as its new head women’s basketball coach on Friday.
Robertson, currently the women’s head basketball coach at Bowie State, has been named the new Lady Bulldog coach, athletics director Charlene Johnson said.
Robertson, who succeeds Tonya Mackey, who served in the capacity four seasons, will be introduced at a 12 noon news conference Thursday (Apr. 17) at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus.
“South Carolina State is pleased to have Doug Robertson on board as the new women’s basketball coach,” Johnson said. “He brings many years of experience to our program and is a proven winner.
“We are excited about turning the reins of our program over to him and feel that he is capable of restoring Lady Bulldog basketball to the lofty heights it once enjoyed. And, we look forward to presenting Coach Robertson to the community and all of our constituents on Thursday.
Robertson, a Baltimore native, comes to Orangeburg and SC State after three seasons as head coach at Bowie State (also Lady Bulldogs), where he compiled a 53-33 record. He had his most productive campaign last season when he guided his team to a 22-5 record and the Eastern Division Championship of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, garnering Coach of the Year honors.
Robertson, earlier, served as an assistant at Bowie State (1994-99), helping the university to a 126-19 mark, three straight CIAA titles and four trips to the NCAA Division II tournament.
Following his first tenure at Bowie State, he spent five seasons (2000-05) as an assistant at Delaware State during a stretch when the Lady Hornets reach the MEAC tournament final three times and captured the regular-season title once (2004). Robertson also served a stint as an assistant at St. John’s (1999-2000).
Robertson earned a bachelor’s from Bowie State in 1995 and is currently pursuing a master’s in public administration at the school.
He is married to the former Danielle Parks and they are the parents of a son.
