Delaware State forced Hampton into 26.1 percent shooting and recorded a season high nine blocks in a 58-36 win over the Lady Pirates in a MEAC women’s basketball contest in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Hornets improved to 11-12 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC, while Hampton lost its second straight to fall to 12-9 and 6-3.
Delaware State also snapped a four-game losing streak to the Lady Pirates. Hampton hit 12-of-48 shots from the field, including zero-of-eight three-point attempts. The point total was the lowest of the season for the Lady Pirates, whose previous low was 41 in last Monday loss to North Carolina A&T (41-73).
Sophomore center Thea Littlepage led Delaware State’s defensive effort with five blocks, one shy of her school record. Littlepage has twice recorded six blocks in a game. She also had a team high three of Delaware State’s 12 steals. The Lady Hornets never trailed in the contest. The score was 12-12 before DSU took control. Ashley Thompson capped a 12-0 run with a jumper to give the Lady Hornets a 24-12 lead with 4:56 left in the first half. Keyhana Wakefield scored six points on two three-point field goals during the rally.
Delaware State led 28-16 at the half. Hampton hit just five-of-25 shots from the field in the opening stanza (20%). Selena Galloway hit three free throws to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Lady Hornets a 47-28 lead with 5:20 left to play. Delaware State held its biggest lead, 56-30, after a three-pointer by Galloway with 2:06 remaining.
She led all players with a season high 13 points. Wakefield was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with 12. Artavia Burns was high scorer for Hampton wit nine points. Delaware State returns to action Monday evening at home against Howard, while Hampton will visit UMES on Monday.
