Raquel Collier led Delaware State (10-11, 5-2 MEAC) with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Keyhana Wakefield added 10, to lead the visiting Lady Hornets to a 52-49 victory over Morgan State on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Morgan State (11-9, 5-4 MEAC), which has now dropped three straight games for the first time this season, was led by Tamara Rogers’ team-high 10 points and Shalane Price finished with nine. Corin Adams, who ranked third in the league in scoring ? 17.7 points per contest ? was held to eight points.
The Lady Bears, who trailed by as much as eight points (37-29) in the second half, battled back with a 13-4 run over the next nine minutes to reclaim the lead at 42-41, following a layup by Price with 7:22 left.
Morgan State held a four-point advantage (47-43) at the 3:59 mark of the second half, but was unable to hang on, as the guests closed out the game with a 9-2 run for the victory. During that stretch, Morgan State was out hustled on the boards and to loose balls, which allowed for extra opportunities for the Lady Hornets.
The Hornets outrebounded Morgan State, 40-28, with Ashley Thompson and Jameka Smith grabbing eight boards apiece. Morgan State did have an 8-4 advantage in steals however, falling six shy of its average of 14 steals per game.
Morgan State will look to get back on track when it takes on MEAC newcomer Winston-Salem State on Saturday, Feb. 9, in the third game of its season-long four-game homestand. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.
