MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

North Carolina A&T State guard Steven Rush was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Howard’s Adam Walker was named the Rookie of the Week while Morgan State’s Boubacar Coly was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Rush (G, 5-8, 170, Sr., Greensboro, NC) averaged 22.0 points, connecting on 12-of-22 baskets (54-percent) as he led the Aggies to a 2-0 mark in conference play last week. The conference leader in made 3-pointers, Rush finished 5-of-7 from long range against Howard and sank 7-of-15 shots from behind the arc in the two games. He was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, registering 13-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Walker (F, 6-8, 205, Fr., New York, NY) finished one rebound shy of a double-double including 10 points and nine rebounds as the aided the Howard Bison to a 73-69 overtime victory over Coppin State. He averaged eight points, two assists, and two blocks to help the Bison post a 1-1 conference record last week.

Coly (C, 6-9, 220, Sr., Ziguinchor, Senegal) continues to dominate the Defensive Player of the Week honor earning his sixth straight as he helped the Bears to a 2-0 finish and move into first place of MEAC standings. Coly posted two double-double performances averaging 12.5 rebounds with 13.5 points. He also averaged 3.5 blocks and 1.5 steals.

Other Top Performances

Jessie Burton (SCSU) scored a career-high 22 points, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor and four 3-pointers, against the N.C. A&T Aggies.

Michael Deloach (NSU) connected on 9-of-12 shots for 23 points against the Winston-Salem State Rams.

Donald Johnson (DSU) recorded 22 points including 6-of-9 from long range to help the Hornets defeat Coppin State, 56-48.

Jamar Smith (MSU) posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 50-percent from the field as the Bears defeated Maryland E. Shore, 67-52.

Ed Tyson (UMES) averaged 26 points and four steals in two MEAC match ups last week.
