MEAC Announces Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

 North Carolina A&T’s Amber Bland was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Norfolk State’s Danelle Tate earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Coppin State’s Whitney Cunningham earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Bland (Guard, 5-11, Jr., Boardman, Ohio) averaged 23.5 points and five rebounds during two games last week, including a 84-71 win over Howard to clinch the MEAC regular season title. During the week, Bland shot 63 percent (17-of-27) from the floor and 50 percent (6-of-12) from behind the arc. In a win over South Carolina State, she posted 23 points and added eight steals. Against Howard, Bland led the Lady Aggies with 24 points and nine rebounds, becoming the ninth player in Lady Aggies history to record 1,000 points in a career.

Tate (Forward, 5-10, Fr., Stafford, Virginia) averaged 23 points and five rebounds off the bench to help Norfolk State to a 1-1 record last week. She recorded 13 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and added five rebounds in a 69-45 non-conference win over Winston-Salem State. In a loss to Hampton, Tate recorded a career-high 33 points, while shooting 60 percent from the field (12-of-17).

Cunningham (Center, 6-3, Jr., Baltimore, Maryland) helped Coppin State extend their current win streak to seven with victories over Howard and Maryland Eastern Shore. She recorded 11 rebounds (nine defensive) and two blocks and helped CSU hold Howard to 30 percent shooting from the floor. Against Maryland Eastern Shore, the Lady Eagles held UMES to a 28 shooting percent and Cunningham posted 19 points, 10 rebounds (nine defensive) and one blocked shot.

Other Top Performers:

Corin Adams (MSU) averaged 16.5 points per game and totaled nine steals to help Morgan State to a 1-1 mark last week.

Rachel Butler (Ham) led the Lady Pirates to a 1-1 mark with 32 points and 16 rebounds.

Theresa Davis (MSU) scored a career-high 14 points against Hampton.

Britney Griffin (MSU) posted 18 points and 20 rebounds, on 8-of-12 from the floor, in games against Hampton and Delaware State.

April McBride (UMES) recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 64-41 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Katreem Palmer (DSU) was just shy of a double-double with a season-high 20 points and nine rebounds in a 66-49 win over Morgan State.

Marie Reid (SCSU) averaged 23.5 points and six rebounds last week in two games for the Lady Bulldogs.

Rashida Suber (CSU) helped Coppin State extend its win streak to seven while averaging 18 points per game.
