Boubacar Coly had 15 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds and six blocked shots, as Morgan State overcame a stagnant first half to beat Maryland Eastern Shore 67-52 on Saturday for its fifth straight victory, and fourth consecutive win over the Hawks.
Coly was one of three Bears who finished the contest by collecting a double-double (points & rebounds) in a balanced attack to help the Morgan State remain unbeaten (6-0) at Hill Field House this season.
Senior Jamar Smith, one of the MEAC’s leading scorers, finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Marquise Kately poured in 15 points, 11 boards and added four assists.
Ed Tyson led MD-Eastern Shore with 28 points, 18 in the first half, but couldn’t stop the Hawks’ 11-game losing streak. Tyson was the only Hawk to score in double-figures and the Baltimore product ended up outscoring the rest of his teammates combined by a 28-24 margin.
Morgan State had their hands full trying to deal with Tyson throughout most of the first half. The teams played to four ties and seven lead changes before Coly and Kately scored back-to-back baskets to give the Bears a slim 33-30 lead at the break.
The Bears ended the stalemate during the opening minutes of the second half. Morgan State, among the MEAC’s top-ranked defenses, held the Hawks to a single field goal through the first seven minutes. Smith hit a layup to cap a 10-4 run and give the Bears a 43-34 lead with 16:27 remaining.
MD-Eastern Shore ended up shooting 30.8 percent (16-52) from the floor and connected on just 1-for-15 (6.7 percent) from three-point territory.
Tyson was limited to 2-for-11 shooting in the second half.
The Bears dominated the glass by outrebounding the Hawks 46-34 and scored 18 points off of Hawk turnovers.
