Center Marie Reid came off the bench for 16 points and added a career-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season to lead South Carolina State to an 83-60 triumph over Norfolk State Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Guards Brittany Baity and Sophilia Hipps contributed 14 points and six assists each in the victory, the third in a row for Coach Tonya Mackey’s team. Jenell Moore, Rasheeda Jones and Patience Figgins added eight points each.
Moore and Jones also pulled down nine rebounds apiece for the Lady Bulldogs, who climbed to 11-13 overall and 8-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with the win, which gave Mackey’s team a sweep of the series this season. The Lady Bulldogs won 75-58 earlier at Norfolk.
The visiting Lady Spartans, who had just seven players for the game, were led by Danelle Tate, who had 24 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Raychele Payne added 11 points and Genor Dalton 10 for Norfolk State, which also got a team-high eight rebounds from Ebony Gibbs.
The visitors lost their fifth in a row and their six in the last seven outings to fall to 4-18 and 1-12 in the league.
SC State built a 39-29 lead at the half and was never seriously challenged thereafter.
Norfolk State closed the gap to eight points, at 41-33 with 17:22 left in the game, but the host went on a 22-10 run to stretch the margin to 63-43 with 9:38 remaining. SC State took its biggest lead of the game at 77-49 when Figgins converted a layup with 2:56 on the clock.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action Monday when they host North Carolina A&T in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
