B-CU Women Upended in Overtime by Morgan State Lady Bears, 55-50

Morgan State turned in a dynamic comeback on Monday night inside the Ocean Center as the Lady Bears erased a 15-point second half deficit to hold back Bethune-Cookman, 55-50 in overtime in a MEAC women’s basketball contest in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Bethune-Cookman led by as many as 15 points following a Euneshia Proctor lay-up that allowed the Wildcats to jump out to their largest lead of the game at 39-24 with 10:33 remaining in regulation. That, however, would be quickly evaporated as MSU’s Tamara Rogers sparked an awesome 18-1 run that pushed the Lady Bears out in front at 42-40 with 3:50 left in regulation.

It was the work of Corin Adams that both tied the game at 40, and then put the Lady Bears out in front.

B-CU, looking at a possible upset, went back out in front at 44-42 when freshman guard Jalissa Isaac’s three-pointer from the left elbow put the Wildcats, seemingly, in command with just 28 seconds remaining in regulation. But a costly foul by B-CU’s Keturah Newkirk put Adams at the foul line for two free throws, which she appropriately sank, with just one second left to send the game into overtime all knotted up at 44.

In the overtime period, the Lady Bears wasted little time jumping out front as an Adams lay-up and back-to-back free throws from Rogers put the visitors from Baltimore on top, 50-46.

B-CU freshman forward Cleneice Roberts collected two of her nine points in the contest with a spinning backdoor lay-up that put the Wildcats within two at 50-48 before Morgan State’s Adams drained her only three-pointer of the game to cushion their lead at 53-48.

Sharlane Price banged home two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to add to the lead for the Lady Bears, while B-CU freshman Demetria Frank connected on a jumper with nine seconds left to give us the final score of 55-50 in the extra period.

Both teams were cold as ice in the first half as the crowd saw B-CU hold a slim 21-18 advantage at the break. The Lady Bears shot just 16 percent from the field on 4-of-25 shooting, while B-CU connected on 9-of-27 shots from the floor.

The difference in the game was clearly at the foul line as the Lady Bears of MSU used their physical play to toe the line 37 times to the Wildcats 15. MSU shot 24-of-37 from the charity stripe while B-CU was a dismal 5-of-15.

The scoring leaders for the Lady Bears were Corin Adams with 19 points and five steals, while teammate Theresa Davis added eight points and 10 rebounds. Britney Griffin led the game with 13 boards for MSU.

Bethune-Cookman was led by Demetria Frank’s 18-point and 12-rebound performance for her second double-double of the year. Of her first double-up ... a contest last month at Morgan State (14 pts., 13 rebs.). Frank also pitched in on defense with six steals. Meanwhile, teammate Euneshia Proctor added 10 points and five boards.
