Maryland Eastern Shore guard Ed Tyson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Norfolk State’s Brandon Monore was named the Rookie of the Week while Morgan State’s Boubacar Coly was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Ed Tyson (G, 6-2, 200, Jr., Baltimore, MD) of Maryland E. Shore averaged 27 points and three rebounds as the Hawks finished 1-1 in conference play last week. He shot impressively from the field connecting on 54 percent from the floor and 71 percent from behind the arc. He was perfect from 3-point range against N.C. A&T, recording 5-of-5 3-pointers with 30 points and four assists. Against the Pirates, he recorded 24 points, six rebounds, two assists and five blocks as the Hawks upset the conference’s preseason favorite.
Norfolk State’s Brandon Monroe (F, 6-7, 215, Raeford, NC) averaged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds to help the Spartans finish 2-0 in conference play last week and extend their win streak to four. Against Florida A&M he finished 7-of-9 from the field with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Morgan State’s Boubacar Coly (6-9, 220, Sr., Ziguinchor, Senegal) posted back-to-back double digit rebounding performances in the Bears two MEAC matchups last week. Against South Carolina State, Coly grabbed 13 boards. He followed with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots against Florida A&M. This is Coly’s seventh Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Other Top Performances
Roy Bright (DSU) averaged 27.5 points and four rebounds, hitting 13-of-24 shots from long range, to help the Hornets finish 1-1 last week.
Jessie Burton (SCSU) had 21 points, four rebounds and six assists against the Hampton Pirates.
Denzel Jackson (UMES) tallied nine rebounds against Hampton and 12 boards against N.C. A&T with three blocks and two steals for a solid defensive effort last week for the Hawks.
Jason Johnson (SCSU) averaged 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks in two conference matchups for the Bulldogs last week.
Ishmawiyl McFadden (UMES) averaged 13.5 points, three rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Hawks.
Tony Murphy (NSU) fell one rebound shy of a double-double against Florida A&M, finishing with 26 points (10-of-22) and nine rebounds.
Steven Rush (NCAT) finished with 19 points, four rebounds and six assists against the Hawks Saturday night.
Jamar Smith (MSU) averaged 27 points and 8.5 rebounds including a double-double of 34 points and 12 rebounds against the Rattlers to aid the Bears to a 1-1 mark last week.
Lamar Twitty (FAMU) posted a double-double of 28 points (10-of-14) and 10 rebounds in an overtime win over Morgan State.
