Aggie Women Keep Streak Alive, Beat Wildcats

The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team placed all five starters in double figures and won its 10th consecutive game with an 89-55 rout of Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium.

Brittanie Taylor-James led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Ta’Wuana Cook added 13 points and eight assists and Amber Bland finished with 15 points and three steals.

The win was the Aggies 10th straight, which is a new school record. The 2007-2008 Aggies also now own the best conference start in school history as they improved to 17-5 overall and 10-0 in the MEAC.

Both marks were previously set by the 1989-90 N.C. A&T women’s basketball team. “We have some ladies on this team who have their eye on the prize,’’ said head Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “All I can say is we’re happy with where we are, but not completely where we want to be.”

It was obvious early it was going to be a record-breaking night for the Aggies. They jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game thanks to a Taylor-James three from the corner. The lead grew to 23 on a Nancy Rembert skip pass to Lamona Smalley that resulted in a made jump shot.

The Aggies led by as many as 39 in the second half as they recorded their most lopsided road win since Feb. 17, 2003 when they beat Morris Brown on the road by 38. It was their most lopsided road win in the conference since Feb. 10, 2003 when they defeated Morgan State 77-37.

The Aggies now face two of their toughest games of the season. They welcome to Irvin-Corbett Court second-place Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon at 2. They then host defending MEAC tournament champion Delaware State Monday afternoon at 4 in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

“We were able to play a lot of kids tonight,’’ said Bibbs. “We’re going to need those kids for these next two games, so it was good that they saw game action tonight.”

The Aggies matched their win total from last season with 17 and are six wins away from breaking the school record for wins set by the 1990-91 team that won 22 times.
