It was just one of those special nights for Reggie Holmes. It seemed that anything he shot was more than likely going to end up in the basket.
Reggie Holmes scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead Morgan State (15-8, 9-1 MEAC) over South Carolina State 81-55, extending the Bears winning streak to seven, their longest since 1974. The Bears also continue their home supremacy by improving to 9-0 at Hill Field House, and remain in first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Holmes, a Baltimore product from St. Frances HS, was solid from beyond the arc. The sophomore tied a school record by recording seven 3-pointers on the night, and was a perfect 6-for-6 in the first half as the Bears built a 43-26 lead.
Holmes finished 7-for-9 from three-point territory, tying a record set by Tremain Byrd in 1998 and matched by Sam Brand (now Morgan State assistant coach) in 2005.
Jamar Smith, one of the MEAC’s leading scorers, finished with 20 points (6-14 FG) and junior Marquise Kately added 18 points (8-16 FG) and seven rebounds.
The Bears defense racked up 16 steals and hounded South Carolina State (8-16, 4-6) into committing 30 turnovers. Morgan State scored 27 points off of turnovers.
Morgan State held a slight 34-32 advantage on the boards and were led by Boubacar Coly who collected a game-high 13 rebounds.
Jerrell Green had a solid game and finished with a game-high eight assists.
