The Morgan State Bears may not have a perfect record, but they are definitely perfect at home.
Marquise Kately scored a game-high 14 points with nine rebounds and Morgan State pounded the Winston-Salem State Rams 63-41 on Saturday.
This was the Bears’ seventh consecutive win -- a mark that has not been attained since the 1974-75 season when Morgan State would go on to advance to the Division II Final Four.
Jamar Smith had 12 points and five rebounds, Reggie Holmes scored 11 points off the bench and Boubacar Coly added eight points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots for the Bears (14-8, 9-1 MEAC), who shot 49 percent and improved their home record to 8-0 in Hill Field House.
Jermaine “Itchy” Bolden fed Smith for an alley-oop dunk with 4:21 left on the clock that put Morgan State ahead 60-30. The Bears limited the Rams to a season-low 12 field goals, eight of which were scored in the second half.
Morgan State also scored 26 points off of turnovers, held a 29-11 advantage in bench scoring, and had an answer each time the Rams made a key play.
Jerrell Green, the MEAC’s assist leader, dished out a game-high six assists, while Bolden pitched in four.
Kately scored 10 points to help the Bears explode out to a 23-4 lead. Winston-Salem State (8-13) hit just four baskets in the first half and Darrell Wonge’s three-pointer at the 7:27 mark left the Rams trailing 23-11.
Morgan State fired back with a 16-2 run and went into the locker room with a commanding 39-13 lead.
Wonge scored 11 points for cold-shooting Winston-Salem State, while Jamal Durham added eight points.
Coming off a 60-50 loss to Bethune-Cookman in their previous game, the Rams shot 28.6 percent, got outrebounded 33-27 and fell for the fifth time in six games.
