Hornets Fall to Spiders, 76-66

RICHMOND, Va.? Double-doubles by Arturo Dubois and Frisco Sandidge were not enough as the Delaware State Hornets (2-10, 1-0 MEAC) fell to the Richmond Spiders (5-3), 76-66, at the Robins Center Saturday, night.

Dubois posted 15 pts and 10 rebounds and Sandidge collected 20 pts. and 12 boards were joined in double-digit scoring by Donald Johnson, who has 17 points.

After falling behind by as many as 16 points, DSU battled back to come within two points of the Spiders with 3:27 left in the game. However, missed opportunities at the free-throw line and costly turnovers were the difference as the Hornets suffered their 10th loss of the season.

“We are still struggling trying to understand everyone’s role on the team,” said head coach Greg Jackson. “We have a lot of guys on the team, concentrating on playing one-on-one basketball. Until we get to the point where we are going to run our system on both ends of the floor, them we are going to continue to struggle. Tonight was a learning experience for our team. Our guys showed a lot of character tonight. We got back in the ball game. And we had a chance to win. Down the stretch, in the last four minutes, we turned the ball over too much, which hurt us.”

Sandidge’s 20 points led all Hornets and his 12 boards were good enough for a game-high. The Lynchburg, Va., native shot 8-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line to record his third 20-point outing in the team’s last four games. Dubois shot 6-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-7 from the charity stripe to register his four-straight double-digit scoring performance. A product of Harlem, N.Y., Dubois grabbed 10 boards to record his second double-double of the season. He also tallied three blocks. Johnson poured in 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting (3-of-7 from behind the arc).

For the game, Delaware State shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field and 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) from 3-point land. The Hornets struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 52.9 percent (9-of-17). The Hornets, averaging nearly 18 turnovers-per-game entering tonight’s contest, committed 21 turnovers, which Richmond scored 36 points off of. DSU out-rebounded the Spiders, 38-27, and scored 16 points off of 12 Richmond turnovers.

The Spiders shot 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor and 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from behind the arc. The Spiders were led by David Gonzalvez, who registered 20 points on 9-of -16 shooting. Also scoring in double-figures were Jarhon Giddings (14 pts.) and Kevin Anderson (19 pts.). Leading all Spiders in rebounds was Josh Duinker, who has six.

The Hornets came out strong early in the first half, leading the Spiders through the first four minutes of action. A dunk by Kevin Smith with 15:25 on the clock knotted the game at 6-all. Holding onto its lead for the remainder of the half, Richmond went on a 14-6 run to enter halftime up, 35-22.
