SC State Women Down Winston-Salem State, 64-44

The South Carolina State women picked up only their second win of the season in six outings Saturday with a 64-44 triumph over Winston-Salem State at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Senior Kristin Johnson came off the bench for 18 points to lead Coach Doug Robertson’s team, which improved to 2-4 on the season. Senior Marie Reid and junior Sophilia Hipps chipped in 11 points each, while Jenell Moore, another senior, added 10 points, along with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Rams were led by Vontisha Woods and Keoshia Worthy with 13 points each and Rene Rector with 11. Woods, who came off the bench after starting the first seven contests, also had nine rebounds for WSSU, which fell to 0-8 on the season.

After an early 3-3 tie, the host Lady Bulldogs took control of the game with a 23-12 run to build a 26-15 advantage with just under six minutes left in the opening half. Following a radio timeout, SC State got a three-point play from Moore and a driving layup from freshman Raina Chambers for a 31-15 edge with 5:00 on the clock.

The Lady Rams scored the next five points on an inside basket by Woods and a three-point play by Chloe Morse to pull to within 11, at 31-20, at the 4:02 mark, but SC State closed out the half with a 7-4 run to take a 38-24 edge to the locker room.

The visitors scored five of the first six points to start the second stanza to cut the lead to 39-29 with 17:25 to play, but a 12-2 run by the Lady Bulldogs ? including five points by Johnson ? pushed the host’s advantage to 20 -- 51-21 -- with 12:33 remaining. The closest WSSU came after that was 18 points.

SC State, which has struggled from the field all season, connected on 48.0 percent of its attempts Saturday, its best showing of the campaign. WSSC, meanwhile, made just 16 of 60 tries for a 26.7 percentage. The Lady Bulldogs also enjoyed a 50-29 edge on the boards.

The Lady Bulldogs will have a 10-day layoff before returning to action Dec. 16 when they host Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. contest at S-H-M.
