SC State Falls to Nebraska

 

Lncoln, Neb. -- South Carolina State center Jason Johnson poured in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game highs, however, it was not enough as the

Bulldogs fell 77-63 to Nebraska in the first-ever meeting of the two teams Tuesday at the Devaney Sports Center.

Also in double figures for the Bulldogs were Jessie Burton with 13 points and Jason Flager with 10, all in the second half. SC State dropped to 5-6 with the loss.

The Cornhuskers, who climbed to 8-3 with the victory, were paced by Sek Henry with 18 points and Ade Dagunduro with 14. Steve Harley added 13 and Paul Velander came off the bench for 12 for Nebraska.

The Bulldogs trailed 34-29 at the half, but battled back to deadlock the contest at 36-all on a short jumper by Flagler with 17:50 to play.

Following a quick timeout, the Cornhuskers, fueled by seven turnovers by the Bulldogs on the next eight possessions, went on a 15-0 run to build a 51-36 advantage at the 13:11 mark.  SC State could get no closer than 11 points, at 64-53 with Johnson nailed two free throws with 4:07 on the clock.

The Bulldogs, who were playing their first contest since Dec. 17, will have a 10-day break before traveling to Dover, DE to meet Delaware State Jan. 10 in their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action of the season.
