Cross, Cunningham Lead Eagles to First Victory

Freshman Shinaa Cross scored a career-high 20 points and senior Whitney Cunningham had 16 points and 13 rebounds as Coppin State posted its first victory of the season with a 62-52 victory over Robert Morris on Tuesday in the Coppin Center.

Cross finished the game 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw line in topping her previous career best of nine points at Wake Forest. Cunningham was 5-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line and also added three blocked shots.

The Eagles (1-9) snapped a 10-game overall losing streak and put an end to the longest losing streak since the 1986-87 team dropped 14 straight games.

The Eagles limited Robert Morris to 31.1 percent shooting from the floor and forced the Colonials into 21 turnovers. The Eagles converted the turnovers into 23 points and outscored the Colonials 32-14 in the paint.

Robert Morris (3-8) was led by Sade Logan who scored 32 points including hitting eight three-point baskets.

After Cross hit one of two free throws giving the Eagles a 46-31 lead with 10:47 to play in the game, Logan brought the Colonials back.

She connected on three straight three-pointers cutting the lead to 46-40 with 9:05 left in the contest.

The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run increasing the lead back to 51-40 with 6:25 remaining in the second period.

Logan connected on another three-pointer and Kendra Williams hit a layup cutting the lead to 51-45 at the 4:54 mark of the period.

Baskets by Crystal Whittington and Cross upped the lead to 55-45, but a basket by Grace Williams and a pair of free throws from Logan trimmed the lead to 55-49 with 2:47 left.

Lakeytah Irving hit a driving layup, Cross connected on a three-pointer and Cunningham scored inside as the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take a 62-49 lead with 25 seconds to play.

The Colonials held a 5-2 lead before Coppin State responded with an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 lead with 12:37 to play in the opening period.

A three-pointer by Williams tied the game at 13-13 and Logan scored inside giving Robert Morris a 15-13 lead with 7:29 remaining in the half.

The Eagles took a 19-15 lead after a pair of free throws by Whittington, but Logan tied the score with back-to-back baskets at the 4:41 mark.

Coppin State closed the first half on a 5-2 run and took a 27-24 lead into the intermission.

The Eagles will open MEAC play on Saturday (Jan.3) at Morgan State beginning at 2 p.m.
