McKee, Coleman Lead Eagles Past George Washington

 

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Tywain McKee scored 16 points and Sam Coleman had 14 leading Coppin State to a 59-53 victory over George Washington in the seventh-place game at the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center on Tuesday.

McKee scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the first half as the Eagles shot 55.6 percent from the floor and took a 38-24 lead into the intermission.

Coppin State, which snapped a 10-game losing streak with the win, then held off a late comeback by George Washington to post its first victory since its season-opening win against Wilmington. It also marked the Eagles first win against the Colonials in three tries.

George Washington, which dropped to 6-4 on the season, shot 41.2 percent from the floor but made only 4-of-14 free throw attempts.

The Colonials were led by Damian Hollis and Noel Wilmore who scored 14 points each.

George Washington jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the Eagles tied the game at 7-7 on a jumper by Chuka Iloegbu and a three-pointer from Ceslovas Kucinskas.

Trailing 21-17, Coppin State ripped off a 21-0 run as it held the Colonials scoreless for over eight minutes. McKee scored eight points and Coleman had six as the Eagles built a 38-21 lead with 1:17 remaining in the first half.

Hollis finally ended the drought for George Washington with a three-pointer, but the Eagles still held a 38-24 lead at the break.

A free throw by McKee with 16:34 remaining in the game gave the Eagles their largest lead of the contest at 45-26.

George Washington responded with a 16-2 run that closed the gap to 47-42 with 9:00 to play.

A jumper by Brian Chesnut increased the Coppin State lead to 53-44 with 4:26 remaining.

George Washington cut the lead to 57-53 with 1:18 remaining on a 3-point basket by Wilmore, but it marked the last point of the game for the Colonials.

Michael Harper sealed the game with a pair of free throws with two seconds to play.
