The Lady Pirates beat Nevada 62-59 on Monday night. With the win Hampton improved to 3-7 while Nevada fell to 6-6.
Hampton went ahead 19-15 with 8:19 remaining in the first half before a layup by Nevada’s Kayla Williams brought the Pack to within two, 19-17.
Hampton and Nevada traded baskets to open the second half as neither team led by more than a point until a jumper by Nevada’s Dellena Criner with 15:30 left in the game put the Pack up by three, 43-40. Nevada had a four point lead, 46-42, with 14:01 remaining before Hampton tied the game at 46-46 with 12:06 left in the game.
Hampton took a four-point lead 52-48 with 7:53 remaining before a layup by Cherlanda Franklin cut the lead to two points, 52-50 with 6:37 left in the game. Hampton extended its lead to seven points 61-54, with 3:21 remaining before Nevada battled back to pull to within two, 61-59, on a layup by Franklin with 47 seconds to play.
Nevada recorded a steal on Hampton’s possession with under 30 seconds remaining but Moore’s jumper was short and Hampton regained possession with five seconds left and posted the 62-59 win.
Whitney Hill led the team with 13 points and three rebounds. Sharella Leslie also had 10 points in the win. Senior Chinyere Ukoh had a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Hampton shot just 36.5 percent from the floor to Nevada’s 40.0 percent. The Wolfpack turned the ball over 19 times and Hampton won the rebounding battle 49-42.
The Lady Pirates (3-7) will return to the court on Jan. 6 against St. Louis at the Convocation Center.
