Late Rally Leads Georgia State Past Lady Hornets

Georgia State outscored Delaware State 12-3 in the final 2:46 of the game en route to a 55-50 win over the Lady Hornets at the GSU Sports Arena Sunday.

 

The Panthers won for the third time in four games to improve to 5-3 on the season. Delaware State dropped its eighth game in the last nine contests to fall to 2-8.

 

The see-saw battle featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes.

 

Candice Stewart capped off a 6-0 Delaware State rally with two free throws to give the Lady Hornets a 47-43 lead with 3:05 left to play.

 

After Dana Olsen hit three throws to pull Georgia State to within a point, the Panthers regained the lead, 48-47, on a lay-up by Brittany Hollins with 1:44 remaining.     

 

Delaware State committed a turnover and missed three shots on its next three possessions. Georgia State responded with five free throws to open up a 53-47 lead with 16 seconds left in the game.

 

Keyhana Wakefield hit a three-point shot to pull the Lady Hornets to within 53-50 with 11 seconds left, but Crystal Johnson sealed the win for Georgia State with two free throws with six seconds remaining.

 

The first half featured five ties and four lead changes. The biggest first-half lead was five points by Georgia State. The Panthers led 24-21 at intermission.

 

Wakefield was high scorer for Delaware State with 12 points. She also led the team with three assists. Selena Galloway came off the bench to add 11 points for the Lady Hornets. Ashley Thompson had a career-best nine rebounds, while Jameka Smith tied her career-high with nine steals for DSU.

 

Georgia State’s Jylisa Williams led all players with 17 points. Her performance included 9-of-10 shooting at the free throw line. She also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds.   

 

Delaware State will return to action next Sunday (Dec. 28) at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.
