No. 23 Gators Defeat Coppin State, 75-34

Lomika Thompson scored 13 points leading three players in double figures and No. 23 Florida shot 52.7 percent from the floor in a 75-34 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday in the O'Connell Center.

 

The Gators also shot 52.6 percent from the three-point line and scored 41 points off of 25 Coppin State turnovers.

 

Thompson was joined by Trumae Lucas and Marshae Dotson in double figures with 10 points each.

 

Whitney Cunningham led Coppin State with eight points and eight rebounds, while Jennifer Martin and Danielle Anders each scored six points.

 

The Eagles, who dropped to 0-8 on the season, shot 28.3 percent from the floor.

 

Florida, who improved to 9-1 on the year, jumped out to a 44-17 lead at halftime on the strength of scoring 24 points off of 15 Coppin State turnovers.

 

Cunningham connected on back-to-back baskets to open the game for CSU and the Eagles held an early 4-3 lead. Steffi Sorensen and Jennifer Mosser hit back-to-back three-point baskets giving the Gators a 9-4 lead with 18:04 to play.

 

Lakeytah Irving answered with a three-pointer for the Eagles, which trimmed the margin to 9-7 with 17:31 remaining in the first half.

 

Florida responded with a 20-2 run that gave the Gators a 29-9 lead with 9:40 remaining in the first half.

 

Florida held its largest lead of the first half at 44-15 on a layup by Thompson before Martin scored on a jumper for CSU bringing the halftime score to 44-17.

 

An 8-0 run by Coppin State early in the second half cut the lead to 53-29 with 13:44 remaining in the game, but the Gators answered with a 13-2 run that increased the lead back to 66-31 with 8:13 left in the contest.
