Senior night honoree Yolanda Roberts had match-highs of 17 kills and 15 digs as the Norfolk State volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to beat Hampton 3-1 (21-25, 26-28, 25-14,25-17) on Wednesday night at Echols Hall. NSU ends the regular season at 10-22, while Hampton closes out the regular season at 6-27.
Both teams will participate in next week's MEAC Tournament which runs from Nov. 14-16 at Holland Hall on Hampton's campus. The Spartans will be the fourth seed in the southern division and the Lady Pirates are seeded fourth in the north.
The Lady Pirates took the first set relatively easily, but the Spartans put up a tough fight to take the next three. The second set was a nail-biter to the end. With the score tied at 24-all, Breanna Allums and Angie Clewis combined to block an attack by Adriana Vazquez to go up 25-24.
Allums followed with an attack error to tie the score again at 25-all. The teams traded points once more, but the Spartans took the lead on a kill by Clewis to go up 27-26, and then Clewis teamed with Nicole Kessner to block another Vazquez attack for the win.
The Spartans took control of the next two set as the Lady Pirates unraveled.
Mianna Armstrong, Aaryn Harrison and Vazquez each had eight kills for Hampton. Lihi Elkayam had a team-high 28 assists and Alyssa Jackson matched Roberts' defensive effort with 15 digs.
For NSU, Clewis had 11 kills and 1.5 blocks, while the Spartans' other senior, Shardonay Blueford, had 10 kills. Kessner had 46 assists and eight digs and Allums added 13 digs and eight kills.
