MEAC Announces Volleyball Championship Tournament Seedings

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks and Florida A&M University Lady Rattlers earned the top seeds in the northern and southern divisions of the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament. The tournament begins at noon on Friday, November 14 and will conclude at noon on Sunday, November 16 in Holland Hall on the campus of Hampton (Va.) University.

UMES finished the season undefeated (10-0) in MEAC play for the second consecutive year. The Lady Hawks posted an unblemished record in 30 conference sets and concluded the regular season on a six match win streak.

Florida A&M earned the top seed in the southern division with a 7-1 mark in conference play. The defending MEAC champion Lady Rattlers have won seven of the last eight MEAC crowns.

Howard won the tiebreaker over Delaware State in the northern division to earn the number two seed. The Lady Bison’s 7-3 mark was their best finish in conference play since the 2001 season.

Hampton (4-6) rounds out the northern division with the fourth and final seed. The Lady Pirates will compete in their first championship tournament since 2005.

South Carolina State (5-3) secured the second seed in the southern division. Bethune-Cookman (3-5) won the tiebreaker over Norfolk State for the second straight year to capture the third seed in the southern division.

Only the top four teams in each division are eligible to compete for the conference title. Seedings are determined by overall conference records. Morgan State (2-8), Coppin State (0-10) and North Carolina A&T (2-6) have been eliminated from tournament play based on their MEAC record.

The MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament begins on Friday, November 14 through Sunday, November 16 at Hampton (Va.) University. The volleyball championship will conclude with the championship finale at noon on Sunday, November 16. Admission is free and open to the public.
