DSU Suffers Second Half Breakdown In Loss To Navy

For the second straight game, Delaware State suffered a second half collapse, resulting in a 55-45 loss to Navy at Alumni Hall Sunday afternoon. The Lady Hornets dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Midshipmen won their second in a row to improve to 4-4.

 

Delaware State led by as many as 11 points in the first half, and held a 25-19 lead at the break.

 

The Lady Hornets were in control for much of the first half.

 

Jameka Smith capped off a 12-1 Delaware State rally with a three-point play to give the Lady Hornets a 16-5 lead with 9:07 left in the half. DSU led 25-15 when Keyhana Wakefield hit one of two free throws with 2:06 to go before intermission.

 

Navy scored the last four points of the half to cut the Lady Hornets’ to 25-19 at the break.

 

The Midshipmen began the second half with a 9-2 run, and pulled ahead 28-27 on two free throws by Whitney Davidson with 16:22 left to play.

 

After Navy opened up a 30-27 lead, the Lady Hornets tied the game at 30 when Smith nailed a three-point shot with 14:42 remaining.

 

The Midshipmen answered with a 7-0 run, and opened up a 37-30 lead when Morgan Hill hit a lay up and free throw with 12:24 left in the game.

 

Delaware State hit just two of eight shots from the field and committed four turnovers over the next six minutes, as Navy stretched its lead to 43-34.

 

The Midshipmen opened up their biggest lead, 52-38, after a three-pointer by Erin Edwards with 1:18 to go.

 

Navy hit 11-of-19 second half shots (57.9%), and outscored DSU 36-20 in the final 20 minutes.

 

Delaware State was 17-for-55 from the field (30.9%), including just 9-of-31 in the second half (29%).

 

Smith was high scorer for the Lady Hornets, matching her career-high with 17 points. She was 6-for-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point territory. Sonia Johnson came off the bench to add 11 points and seven rebounds, while Wakefield had 10 for DSU. Thea Littlepage led the Lady Hornets with eight rebounds.

 

Angela Myers led a balanced Navy attack with 12 points.

 

Delaware State returns to action next Saturday (Dec. 6) at Syracuse.
