The Delaware State bowling team finished fourth out of 12 teams in its season-opening competition at Fairleigh Dickinson University this weekend. The Hornets posted an 8-5 record during the three-day invitational, which featured regular team play and baker system scoring.
Delaware State was 3-2 on the opening day of competition on Friday, defeating New Jersey City, Morgan State and St. Peter’s, while falling to Vanderbilt and defending NCAA and MEAC champion Maryland Eastern Shore in the Baker matches.
The Hornets were 4-1 in regular team play on Saturday. DSU posted consecutive wins over Kutztown (986-941), Wisconsin-Whitewater (107-889), St. Francis (955-819) and Adelphi (1053-854) before dropping its final match of the day against Fairleigh Dickinson (947-973). Sophomore Angela Reynolds rolled a team-high 237 to lead the Hornets vs. Kutztown. Junior Michelle Turnbell posted a 230 score in that match.
Delaware State had four bowlers (out of 82) in the Top 20 for best averages in team play. Reynolds was ninth with an average of 205.60. Turnbell was 11th at 201.20, Kalyn Washburn 12th at 200.40 and Adriana Jaime 18th at 193.80. Washburn had the second-best game for the Hornets, rolling a 236 in the over Adelphi. Turnbell and Washburn each had three games of 200 or more.
The Hornets closed out the tournament with a 1-2 record in baker play on Sunday, splitting two matches with New Jersey City and falling to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Vanderbilt (11-2) was first in the final team standings, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (11-2) and New Jersey City (8-5). Maryland Eastern Shore was sixth.
