The Delaware State bowling team finished third (out of 20 teams) at the UMES/Hawk Invitational last weekend. The Hornets posted a 13-5 record during the event, trailing only first-place Vanderbilt and runner-up Kutztown. Host UMES, the defending NCAA champion, was fourth in the tournament.
The tourney featured six teams in the Top 10 of the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association poll. Delaware State is ranked ninth in the poll.
Delaware State was in first place after posting a 6-0 record in Baker system contests on Friday. The Hornets defeated Bowie State (917-725), Morgan State (892-789), UMES (951-910), Howard (1034-650), Adelphi (1012-870) and Cheyney (1021-512) on the opening day.
DSU split six matches in regular team play on Saturday. The Hornets began the day with wins over Bethune-Cookman (859-737) and St. Paul’s (1068-766), before dropping consecutive matches to Fairleigh Dickinson (873-836), New Jersey City (894-826) and Kutztown (1013-938). Delaware State ended the day with an 892-703 win over Hampton.
The Hornets were 4-2 on the final day, which consisted of Baker system contests. Delaware State began the day with losses to Vanderbilt (764-703) and Sacred Heart (766-751) before defeating North Carolina Central (714-624), St. Francis (773-623), Elizabeth City State (855-558) and Long Island (785-431).
Angela Reynolds had Delaware State’s best tournament average of 191, 12th among all competitors. DSU’s Kalyn Washburn was 16th with a 187 average. Reynolds had the Hornets’ top tournament game of 245 vs. St. Paul’s. Adriana Jaime rolled 232 vs. Kutztown, while Washburn rolled 225 vs. St. Paul’s.
