Carrier?s Three Helps Warhawks Hand Morgan State First Loss, 59-57

Jesse Carrier scored six of her eight points in the final 41 seconds of the game by way of three-pointers, including the game winner to held the University of Louisiana at Monroe (LMU) to a 59-57 come-from-behind victory over Morgan State on Friday evening in the opening game of the Fifth Third MU Classic at the Cam Henderson Center on the campus of Marshall University.

Trailing 57-53, Carrier connected on her first trey of the game with 41.3 seconds left, making it a 57-56 game. Morgan State would then miss on two scoring opportunities, following a missed layup and a put back opportunity, as the ball eventually went out of bounds, giving the Warhawks the final possession.

The Lady Bears (3-1), who were unable to secure the crucial loose balls, grab the necessary rebounds or locate the open shooter all day, paid for it in the end. Lottie Moore penetrated into the lane and found an open Carrier, who drilled the three-pointer from the right corner to put ULM up 59-57 with 6.1 left in the contest.

Morgan State’s Erin Hawkins drove the length of the floor, but her runner in the lane rolled out at the buzzer.

The Warhawks (2-1) were led by Larrie Williams, who came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Ashley Wallis, Moore and Carrier each finished with eight points.

It had been twenty-five years since the Morgan State women’s basketball program set the school history by winning its first four games to start the season. The Lady Bears, who entered the contest undefeated and as the tournament favorite, appeared to be heading in that direction, as they held an 11-point first half lead, despite not playing good basketball at all.

Morgan State led (27-16), following a free throw by Hawkins with 7:52 remaining in the opening half, but the Warhawks bounced back with a 10-1 run and cut the Morgan State lead to 28-26 with 2:25 left until intermission.

The Lady Bears, which were held without a field goal the final 8:39 of the first half, would connect on 5-of-6 free throws the rest of the way to take a 33-28 halftime lead.

Morgan State was led by Hawkins, who finished with 12 points and Aaries Reed, who added 12 points in a reserve roll. Corin Adams, who entered the game needing 13 points to become the 11th player at Morgan State to reach 1,000 points, finished with 11 points, eight of which came in the first half. Brittany Dodson had a team-high eight six rebounds for Morgan State who was outrebounded 47-35 for the game.

The Lady Bears tallied a game-high 15 steals with Reed leading the way with a career-high five thefts. Phylicia Jones and Adams each recorded three steals. Adams (207 steals) is now one steal away from moving into third-place all-time at Morgan in steals.

The Lady Bears will now await the loser of the tonight’s second game between Tennessee State and host Marshall. Tipoff will be on Saturday evening at either 5 or 7 p.m.
