There was no shortage of offense when the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-25) took a 3-0 loss to the North Carolina Central Eagles (5-26), Monday evening at the McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. Both teams brought their offensive games to the match-up between former CIAA rivals as the two squads combined for 63 kills in just three sets of the match.
The Lady Rams gave one of their best efforts of the season, falling to the Eagles, 21-25, 20-25, and 14-25 in the match. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 24 kills in the match, but the squad committed 18 attack errors that turned out to be critical to the WSSU efforts in the match. WSSU junior hitter Annika Barnwell led the way for the Lady Rams with nine kills in the loss with sophomore Ashley Harris adding eight kills. Lady Ram senior Valentina Pushkina coordinated the WSSU effort with 13 assists. Freshman setter Asia Carr added eight assists in the loss.
The first set of the match was a hard-fought one as the Lady Rams fought themselves to within one point of the Eagles, 19-20 following a Barnwell kill. However, a 5-2 run by the Eagles would end the WSSU threat in the set. The second set was another tough one for the Lady Rams as the team once again battled their way to within three points of the home team, 20-23, but the team could get no closer as the Eagles pulled away for the second set win. The third set saw the Lady Rams run out of gas as the team could not fight their way out of a 13-10 deficit midway through the set. Down the final stretch of the match, the Lady Rams were outscored 12-4 and ended the match with the 14-25 loss.
