Lady Wildcats Put Away North Florida in Season Opener

Friday Night at the ICI Center at Embry-Riddle, several fans got their first glimpse of the new era of Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball under new Head Coach Vanessa Inge. An up-tempo game, with a signature of solid passing and execution is what Coach Inge expected, and the Lady Wildcats delivered, as they downed the Ospreys of North Florida 68-56.

Once B-CU gained the lead in the middle of the first half, they held a solid grip on it, despite several momentum swings and a tight score in the first half. The shooting in the first was even, both teams shooting 40% from the field. However, after halftime, the Lady Wildcats went after UNF and got them in a hole quickly, from which they never recovered.

Playing stiff defense and creating 12 turnovers, including 6 steals, played a large role in taking command of the game. B-CU had 13 points off turnovers in the second half. They hit the offensive boards hard in the second half and got more opportunities at second-chance points.

Several players stood out in the home, opener, five of which Coach Inge praised following the solid victory; Euneshia Proctor, Sarah Bolden, Keturah Newkirk, Jalisa Isaac, and Demetria Frank.

"We had four players in double figures tonight, that really came out and played hard," said Coach Inge, "Euneshia [Proctor] and Sarah [Bolden] were big on the boards tonight. Sarah had a double double at 14 and 16 boards. Keturah [Newkirk] and Jalisa [Isaac] shot the ball very well, and Demetria [Frank] did her thing, getting to the basket and making plays."

Jalisa Isaac led all B-CU scorers, with 19 points (7-11 FG's and 5-7 on 3-Point FG's). Demetria Frank was solid at feeding the ball, with a team-high 8 assists on the night, while still chipping in 15 points.

Sarah Bolden opened the season strong with a total of 16 rebounds and rounding out the double double with 14 points on 7-12 shooting.

"I'm very excited about the play tonight," commented Inge, "I thought we were enthusiastic, tenacious, shot the ball well, played big on the boards, and I felt the ladies deserved this win for as hard as we've been working."

The hard work and conditioning paid off, moving the Lady Wildcats to 1-0 on the 2008-09 season. Next up, St. Augustine's College comes to Daytona Beach for a Nov. 18, 7:00 p.m. game.
