Lady Hurricanes Dominate NSU in 91-42 Victory

Latoya Drake scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Miami players in double figures as the Lady Hurricanes pounded Norfolk State 91-42 on Friday afternoon at the BankUnited Center.

Miami (1-0) controlled every aspect of the game, shooting 45.5 percent (35-of-77) from the floor for the game, forcing 29 turnovers and outrebounding NSU 60-27.

The Spartans (0-1) got on the board first with a jumper by sophomore Genor Dalton with 19:41 left in the first half. But less than 10 seconds later, Shenise Johnson scored a fast-break layup to tie it at 2-all. A layup by Diane Barnes with 18:56 left put UM 4-2 and the Lady Hurricanes would not trail the remainder of the game.

A three pointer by sophomore Danelle Tate with 25 seconds left in the first stanza cut NSU's deficit to 24, 45-21, to end the scoring before the break.

The Spartans did not fare much better in the second half as the Lady Hurricanes outscored them 46-21. UM led by as many as 54, 90-36, after a layup by Vitalija Vasciunaite with 4:06 left in the game.

For UM, Drake was 10-of-12 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds in 20 minutes. Barnes had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Johnson also had 12 points and LaToya Cunningham added 11.

Tate led the Spartans with 12 points and seven boards and freshman Marquilla Evans had 11 points and six rebounds.

The Spartans continue their tour of the Sunshine State with a Sunday matchup at Stetson (0-1) in Deland, Fla. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
