Bethune-Cookman Outlasts Howard, 3-2

Bethune-Cookman outlasted Howard 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 13-25, 25-23, 15-11) Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship tournament in Holland Hall on the campus of Hampton University.

 

Bethune-Cookman (10-16) fell 20-25 in the first game, but roared back in the second game to win 25-15. Howard followed that with a dominating 25-13 win of the third game, before the Lady Wildcats took the fourth and fifth games to advance.

 

Danielle Goodrum led Bethune-Cookman with 14 kills, while Kaiyana Johnson added 11 kills and led the team with a .320 attack percentage. Daryl Rodriguez had a team-high 20 assists, while Shakhea Moore-Hagins recorded 19 digs on defense.

 

Gazelle D’artois led Howard (14-20) with 13 kills, while Gabrielle Martin had 12 and Janel James recorded 10. Grace Demichelis had 41 of the Lady Bison’s 48 assists, and Nicole Brown led the team with 20 digs on defense. Demichelis added 15 digs of her own for a double-double.

 

Bethune-Cookman, the MEAC southern division’s No. 3 seed, will face Florida A&M in Saturday’s semifinal round at Holland Hall, with the match beginning at 3:30 p.m.
