Soimo Takes Individual Title at Spartan Invite

Junior Jonathan Soimo ran a season-best time of 25:31 to win the individual title and help the Norfolk State men tie for first place Saturday at the Spartan Invitational held at Virginia Wesleyan College.

In just the squad’s third meet of the fall season, Soimo led the NSU men in a 1-2-3 finish over the 5-mile (8K) course. Teammate Dominic Luka finished second in 25:57 and Josef Tessema was third in 25:58 as NSU boasted the only three runners to break 27 minutes in the men’s race.

Freshman Ibrahim Kamara and sophomore Jonathan Griffin finished 16th and 18th, respectively, as NSU finished with 40 points as a team. Virginia Wesleyan also finished with 40 points to tie the Spartans for first place. Hampton (76), Virginia State (85) and Virginia Union (106) rounded out Saturday’s competitors.

The Spartans race again next Saturday at the Hawk Challenge hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore.
