Florida A&M defeats Bethune-Cookman, 3-1

Florida A&M topped Bethune-Cookman  (3-1) 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-13, in a four-set victory Monday night in a match held at Embry-Riddle University with construction of a new wood floor at B-CU's Moore Gymnasium.

 

Coach Tony Trifonov's Rattlers' 10-year, 98-match MEAC winning streak was snapped at South Carolina State Saturday night and his team was all business Monday night against the Lady Wildcats (8-12, 3-2 MEAC).

 

FAMU (7-11, 4-1 MEAC) was led by three hitters with double-digit kills (Maria Gomez with 16 kills, Jovana Blazeski 15 kills, and Samara Ferraz 14 kills). Setter Susan Egoavil registered 41 assists and the team had nine service aces in the win.

 

The 'Cats were paced by Chelle Ticeson's 12 of 23 hitting (.478) as she continues among the NCAA and MEAC's top percentage hitters for the 2008 season.  MEAC Player of the Week for B-CU, setter Julie Gibson had 28 assists and nine kills in the match. B-CU's Shakhea Moore-Hagins led both teams with 10 digs.

 

Bethune-Cookman will be back in action Friday night vs. North Carolina A & T with the site and match venue to be determined on Tuesday.  The Moore Gymnasium construction continues into the final two home matches for the 'Cats with Senior Night scheduled for November 7 vs. Winston-Salem State.
