Christine Edwards finished with a match-high nine kills and Thonya Joseph and Whitney Johnson added eight and seven kills, respectively, to lead visiting Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to a 3-0 (25-25, 25-17, 25-18) sweep of Morgan State in a MEAC match at Hill Field House on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Hawks (19-8, 6-0 MEAC) swept the season series over Morgan State for the second consecutive year, while the Lady Bears fell to 2-21 overall, 1-5 in the MEAC, including an 0-4 mark at home this season.
The guests finished the match with a hitting percentage of .297 with 35 kills, while holding Morgan State to 22 kills and a hitting percentage of .077 for the day.
The loss was a frustrating one for a Lady Bears team which notched its second most service aces this season with 10. Dominique Bozier recorded a match-high three service aces and Christa Rogers and Hilary Tutman added two aces apiece. However, the serving game also hindered Morgan State as well, as it committed 12 service errors.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s Christina Estebane’ totaled 29 assists and Caylin Woodward recorded a match-high 11 digs to go with her five kills for the Lady Hawks. Samantha Chukwura finished with a match-high four blocks.
Morgan State was led by Ivanti Bush’s eight kills and Erin Cox, who added seven kills. Delissa Carline finished with a team-high seven digs, while Rogers led the team with 20 assists. Camille Coleman tallied a team-high three blocks and Rogers and Bozier each contributed two blocks to help the Lady Bears to a 5-5 tie with UMES in team blocks.
Morgan State will look to end its three-match losing skid when it travels to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Oct. 24 to take on Howard in a MEAC match at 7 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
