In what some would think was the improbable, and to others the impossible, the SC State women’s volleyball team did what no other team in the conference could do in 98 regular season matches over a 10 year period: they defeated the seven-time defending MEAC champion Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M, 3-1, (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19), and thus ended what has been a dominate streak.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-18, 2-2 MEAC) control the match from the first point and with each point thereafter SC State’s confidence increased. Despite dropping the third set, the Lady Bulldogs remained poised to close out FAMU (6-10, 3-1 MEAC).
“Everything game together on our side of the net at the right time” said second year head coach Millicent Sylvan. “The girls played with a lot of heart and resiliency which led us to victory.”
It was clearly a team effort led by freshman Shabree Roberson, 5-11, middle blocker, from Austin, TX had a dominant game as she put down 14 kills with nine block assists. Sophomore Jarne Gleaton, 5-11, outside hitter, from West Columbia, SC contributed 14 kills with two block assists for the Lady Bulldogs. Freshmen Bria Brimmer and Lauren Harris had 43 assists and 18 digs respectively.
Samara Ferraz had a game-high 18 kills and Jovana Blazeski recorded a double-double, 12 kills-12 digs for the Lady Rattlers in the loss.
SC State will return back to action, this Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. when they host the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T in a MEAC conference contest. The match will be played in Dukes Gym on the campus of South Carolina State University.
