WSSU Ends 2008 Season at Disney XC Classic

The Winston-Salem State cross country teams ended the 2008 season on a high note as the two teams posted some strong performances at the 2008 Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic, Saturday morning. The Rams and Lady Rams stood tall amidst a crowded field to post some stellar times at the event. The Rams finished 25th as a team while the Lady Rams posted a 23rd place finish.

The classic was the final cross country race for WSSU senior Irene Jeptolo and she led the way for the team as she had done for the entirety of her career at WSSU. She finished 72nd in the 5K event posting a time of 19:29:10 in the event. While it was the senior who led the way for the Lady Rams, the WSSU freshmen had their say in the event, posting the next two best finishes for WSSU. Lady Ram freshman Jasmine Whitener had the second best finish for the Lady Rams, placing 99th in the event in a time of 20:04.60 while fellow freshman Ashley Lawson also had a strong day, placing 173rd in 21:27.40.

The Rams had a strong day as well with the WSSU freshmen leading the way as well. Ram freshman Aaron Barnes led the way for the Rams with a 46th place finish in the 8K event in 26:48.90 while fellow freshman Desmond Wiggan finished 88th in a time of 27:38.40.

Both teams will put a bow on the 2008 cross country and will take the remainder of the fall to prepare for the upcoming 2008-09 track and field indoor and outdoor seasons.
