The North Carolina A&T volleyball team will face Florida A&M at home on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
The Aggies hope to get students and fans still excited about homecoming to come inside Corbett Sports Center to help them knock off a team that has won the last seven MEAC Championships.
“We want to put on a good showing out there,’’ said head volleyball coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “Anytime you play on television it gives you a broader audience, which helps in recruiting. Anytime you get the AggieManiacs in the building, it gives you an edge against your opponent.”
This will be Lady Aggies second nationally-televised volleyball match. In 2006, North Carolina A&T defeated S.C. State at Corbett Sports Center. This time the Aggies will face a Rattlers team that has defeated the last 97 MEAC opponents they have faced. In fact, the last time Florida A&M lost a conference match it was to N.C. A&T in 1998.
“Florida A&M is Florida A&M,’’ said Schmiedel. “They’re an extremely talented team that executes so well. The thing we can’t do is get intimidated by the name on the jersey. We just have to play smart volleyball, do the things we need to do well and let the outcome take care of itself.”
The Aggies (3-16) have had a resurgence since finally getting a chance to play at home after playing their first 17 matches away from home. Junior Janae Mitchell posted her first-ever double-double Tuesday night against North Carolina Central with 13 kills and 10 digs and fellow hitter Aundia Gray has made only three attack errors in her last two matches.
