DSU Snaps Losing Streak With Win Over St. Augustine's

Raquel Collier led all players with 17 points and Sade Bowen came off the bench to add a season high 11 in Delaware State’s 54-47 win over St. Augustine’s in Memorial Hall Saturday.

The win was the 127th at Delaware State for Lady Hornets’ head coach Ed Davis, tying him with Mary “Honey” Lamb-Bowman for women’s basketball victories at DSU. Lamb-Bowman was 127-138 in 10 seasons at Delaware State (1985-95).

The victory also snapped a six-game losing streak for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 4-9 on the season. St. Augustine’s fell to 8-4.

Delaware State outscored the Falcons 27-18 in the second half after trailing by two at the break. The Lady Hornets scored the first seven points of the game, but St. Augustine’s rallied to make it 9-9 on a three-pointer by Erica Knox with 12:58 left in the first half.

Delaware State responded with a 9-2 run, and pulled ahead 18-11 on a lay up by Bowen. St. Augustine’s outscored DSU 12-4 in the final four minutes of the first half, and led 29-27 at intermission.

The Falcons held their biggest lead, 34-31, after a lay up by Allison Sikes with 16:38 left in the second half. St. Augustine’s led 36-35 before Delaware State’s decisive rally. The Lady Hornets scored the next eight points, and opened up a 43-36 lead when Bowen hit one of two free throws with 6:33 left to play.

Delaware State led by as many as nine in the last two minutes. Sikes led three St. Augustine’s players in double figures with 14 points. Knox and Whitney Griffis added 13 each. Collier also led all players with nine rebounds.

Davis will go for his school record 128th win and 299th as a collegiate head coach when the Lady Hornets return to action next Saturday (Jan. 12) at South Carolina State.
