White Delivers in Overtime Win Over Coppin State

Curtis White scored seven of his 10 points in overtime, including a clutch three point basket, to help Howard defeat Coppin State, 73-69 at Burr Gymnasium. The game was televised live on ESPNU.

Eugene Myatt scored the first basket of the extra period to put the Bison up, 62-60 at the 3:31 mark. Then White gave Howard somewhat of a cushion when he drained a 3-pointer from the right corner with the shot clock winding down to up the margin by five, 65-60.

White made sure that the Bison would end their three-game skid when he canned all four of his free throw attempts down the stretch.

“I just waited for my opportunity,” said White, who has struggled most of the season after suffering a fractured ankle last season. “We needed someone to step it up in that situation and I was able to make some plays. It is a good win for us.”

Howard took its biggest lead of the game at 33-24 early in the second half, only to have Coppin State run off a 24-14 spurt that gave the visitors a brief 48-47 lead.

From there, it was back and forth until the Bison opened a 60-52 lead with just 1:48 remaining in regulation. But Howard failed to score again and the Eagles closed out with an 8-0 run to send the game into overtime.

Myatt led four players in double figures with 17 as Randy Hampton, Adam Walker and White each scored 10.

Antwan Harrison of Coppin State led all scorers with 22 while Tywain McKee added 18 and six assists.

The Bison had one of their better shooting performances, connecting on 49 percent from the field and 50 percent the 3-point range where they have struggled coming into the game. Howard also had a 39-29 rebounding edge over the Eagles. Walker, who had nine and Hampton finished with seven.
