Shalamar Oakley poured in a game-high 33 points and backcourt mate Rashida Suber tallied 32 to lead Coppin State to a 90-63 win over Howard in a MEAC women’s game at Burr Gymnasium. The game was televised on ESPNU and will air on Tuesday (Jan. 29) at 5 p.m. on a tape delay.
Reyna Gross scored the game’s first basket; a 3-pointer and the Lady Bison were able to stay close for a while. But the three-time defending MEAC champs behind the scoring of seniors Oakley and Suber combined for 25 points to take a 38-25 lead at halftime.
Coppin State (10-10 overall, 5-2 MEAC) opened its biggest lead at 53-30 five minutes into the second half before Howard (2-16 overall, 2-4 MEAC) staged a furious 18-4 rally that cut the deficit to 57-48 with more than 10 minutes still remaining. The run was fueled by senior guard Asha Santee, who scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half and freshman guard Zykia Brown, who scored all of her nine points in the stanza.
Following a timeout, Suber and Oakley responded by scoring 10 of their team’s 13 points during a 13-2 run that sealed the deal for the Lady Eagles.
In addition to her 12 points, Santee added a career-high 7 rebounds. Junior forward Tamaya Daniels added 11 points while Shannon Carlisle had a season-high 8 assists.
Oakley and Suber, both pre-season All-MEAC selections, combined for 10 rebounds and 12 assists between them.
