N.C. A&T guard Steven Rush knocked down two clutch free throws in the final seconds of the game to seal the 63-61 win over the Delaware State Hornets in Dover, Del. The win snapped the Hornets three game win streak and improved the Aggies to 8-9 and 3-2 in the MEAC, while the Hornets dropped to 6-10 and 3-1.
Delaware State freshman guard Trevor Welcher connected on a 3-pointer tying the score at 61 with 1.2 seconds left in the game, but Rush’s two free throws following a technical foul for celebrating by the Hornet’s bench sealed the two-point victory.
It was a back and forth battle throughout the game with five ties, three in the final four minutes of the game. Welcher gave the Hornets a three point lead, 55-52, on a 3-pointer with 3:08 left, but Ed Jones scored the next six points for the Aggies giving them a 58-55 lead with 1:09 remaining. Roy Bright connected on a three with 42 seconds left for 58-58 tie and the Aggies Austin Ewing answered with a three with 13 seconds left for 61-58 lead. Bright followed with another three point attempt and off a rebound, Welcher scored another game tying three.
Bright led the Hornets with 23 points and four rebounds and Donald Johnson added 11 points.
The Aggies were paced by Ed Jones who led all scorers with 24 points and Steven Rush who finished with 13.
